DRS Gives Mental Health Advice

The 10th of October marks World Mental Health Day 2023 (established in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health) with the theme “Mental health is a universal human right.”

In a statement, the Regional Directorate of Health (DRS) took advantage of the day to reinforce some recommendations for the promotion of healthy Mental Health:

– Adopt healthy lifestyle habits when it comes to eating, sleeping, and physical activity. Exercise contributes to the prevention of anxiety disorders, panic attacks, and mood disorders (e.g. depression) due to the release of hormones and neurotransmitters (serotonin and dopamine) responsible for the feeling of happiness and well-being. The integration with moments of relaxation and meditation potentiates the positive impact on health.

– Maintain close relationships with family and friends. Emotionally, they are very important for our health. Finding support in others is one of the main building blocks of resilience that allows us to cope with life’s adverse situations.

– Make time to do something you enjoy and that is healthy. You can even establish periods without a cell phone, television,or other screens), to have greater availability for other types of entertainment, whether you are alone or accompanied;

– Do not resort to alcohol, tobacco, or other psychoactive substances to forget or ward off problems. Remember that difficult times don’t last forever, and by talking to someone, you can find a solution or help.

– Foster gratitude and happiness. When we feel grateful, we enjoy a better state of mind. Every day, alone or with others, find positive events in your life and give thanks. This exercise helps train the brain to feel happier.

– If you feel the need, seek support from your Health Centre’s Community Health Team or a professional specialised in the field of Mental Health, as this care is available and accessible to all.
