Cypress and Eucalyptus Pollen Affect Madeira

The pollen levels in the atmosphere in Madeira are predominantly from Cypress and Eucalyptus, confirms the latest pollen bulletin issued by the Portuguese Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (SPAIC).

Both of the archipelagos will be affected by high pollen counts from the herb Parietaria (Lichwort, a member of the nettle family), grasses, and Tanchagem (Plantago tomentosa, grows anywhere and is known for its anti-cancer properties), which is also said to have anti-viral and anti-oxidant properties.

According to SPAIC, outdoor activities should be avoided when pollen concentrations are high.

SPAIC also recommends keeping car windows closed whenever you travel to reduce contact with pollen. Motorcyclists must wear a full helmet.

At home, the society advises that windows should be kept closed when pollen concentrations are high.

The SPAIC also considers that the medication will be the most effective way to combat allergy symptoms, advises sufferers to consult with an immunoallergology specialist for the correct diagnosis and prescription of the most appropriate medication, and warns that prevention “may go down the road of antiallergic vaccines.”

The pollen bulletin publishes pollen levels every week which are collected from various reading posts throughout the territory.
