Star Wars: A Chance to Prove Madeira as An Ideal Film Set

The President of the Regional Government officially expressed his pleasure that Madeira is being used as a Star Wars backdrop location.

While speaking at the 110th anniversary of Madeira Forestry Police, he said that he intends to create conditions that allow for more filmmakers to use Madeira as their settings location, especially as the island already has a history of being used by various film production companies.

A section of the access road to Ponta de São Lourenço, in Caniçal, will be closed from today, the 11th of March until Tuesday the 14th, due to filming. The area concerned is between a section of road between Quinta do Lorde and the roundabout of Baía d’Abra, which will be closed until 08:00 on Tuesday.

As such, the PSP and the Organising Committee of Filming have said that:

“Given the operational changes these closures entail, we alert users to the need to comply with the signs installed on site.”

The Regional Directorate of Roads clarified that the change is motivated by the filming of a “series with international notoriety and with strategic interest for the region.”

Although it does not specify the title, the regional media advances that the filming is related to the Star Wars saga – Star Wars and points out that filming will take place until the end of this month on the south and north coast of Madeira.

Ponta de São Lourenço, characterised by its aridity and the predominance of winds, is classified as a “natural monument” and is part of the Network of Natural Monuments of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
