We Need Housing That Madeirans Can Afford!

The President of PS-Madeira today lamented the difficulties in accessing affordable housing in the Region, criticising the Regional Government for not implementing measures capable of responding to this problem.

In a press conference held this morning, Sérgio Gonçalves reported that Madeira is one of the most expensive regions in Portugal and that interest rates are at a 12-year high, preventing many families and individuals from buying a property.  He went on to say that he believes that the Regional Government is too focused on ‘gold visas’ and luxury housing than on the needs of the people.

Looking at the resources available for housing, Sérgio Gonçalves did not fail to criticise the fact that the Government squandered 33 million euros per year “on political appointments and that, since 2015, more than 240 million euros were injected into Development Societies. Funds that, he stressed, if invested in the housing market would create a more sustainable solution to Madeira’s housing problem.
