Carnival Party Turns to Violence

This year, many of the municipalities have been celebrating carnival with their own carnival processions, and among them was the parish of  São Gonçalo.

However, despite its party atmosphere, the evening ended in violence as a brawl involving more than a dozen people ended with six injured, including a Public Security Police (PSP) officer.

One of the wounded was first treated at the Bom Jesus Health Centre and then sent to hospital, where he remained under observation. Of the first three injured, one had cervical injuries after being hit with a sharp object, and the other two were treated for trauma and abrasions. Two women were also treated, but nobody knew what their injuries were!

The injured policeman complained of trauma to a lower limb and was placed under medical observation.

Police arrests were made

The fight involved both men and women trying to prevent the police from intervening.  The situation deteriorated, and reinforcements were sent in to quell the situation.

Local newspaper, JM, confirmed that two people who were involved in the brawl have been arrested. A police source confirmed to JM that it had been necessary to use force to re-establish public order last night, in São Gonçalo, but said he did not know what triggered the episode.

The same source also said that the police would thoroughly investigate the situation.

Emergency Department full of police

More than a dozen police officers were seen at the Dr. Nélio Mendonça hospital, as well as BIR (Rapid Response Brigade) personnel who were identifying the wounded, witnesses, and other individuals present.
