Madeira Food Bank Collects 24 Tonnes of Food

With the help of 600 volunteers in 25 stores, the Madeira Food Bank (Banco Alimentar) collected approximately 24 tonnes of food during its two day of campaign.

The total amount collected represents an increase of 4,455.6 tons (+22.2%) compared to the May 2019 campaign. The most donated foods were milk, rice, pasta, pulses, spaghetti, biscuits and sugar.

The food collected will begin to be distributed as early as next week, thus helping to meet the food needs of around 8,580 people, who are supported by 42 Social Solidarity Institutions in the Region, either through food baskets, or prepared meals served in social support units.

Those who have not yet had the opportunity to contribute at the weekend, can still do so until the 5th of June through the “Ajuda Vale” product vouchers available at supermarket checkouts, or you can donate through the charity’s online donation portal – www.alimentestaideia.pt-.

In 2021, Banco Alimentar distributed a total of 940 tonnes of food, with an estimated value of more than 1,100 million euros.  This averages at 3.7 tonnes of food per working day.
