50th Anniversary of the Selvagens Islands Nature Reserve

A presentation took place on board the NRP Douro today commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Selvagens Islands Nature Reserve.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, several initiatives will be taking place including the presentation of an illustrated book called ‘Atravessia,’ by João and Isabel Rodrigues. In addition a nine-episode programme will be broadcast on RTP/Madeira, about the Selvagens Islands and the species that live there.

A special edition of sugar packages by Delta Cafés will be launched, while the Association of Commerce and Industry (ACIF) will be supporting a scientific tourism project. Furthermore, an expedition/trip will be carried out on board the boat ‘Maria Manuela,’ with the intention of helping young people understand the importance of nature conservation.  A half century cruise regatta organised by the Madeira Sailing Association will also take place at the Selvagens islands as part of their ‘Wild Islands Without Trash’ project. Mayra Santos will also be swimming between the the Selvagem islands, while Frederico Resende will be sailing between Funchal and the islands.

Susana Prada, Regional Secretary for the Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, highlighted the importance of wildlife and habitat conservation and assured that “the Regional Government will do everything to ensure that the islands are protected for the next 50 years.”
