Takeaway Packaging To Be Taxed

As part of the State Budget 2022, all single-use plastic, aluminum or multi-material plastic containers used to package ready-to-eat, takeaway meals or home delivery meals will now incur an additional 30 cent charge (per item) from 2022.

The proposal, also states, that restaurateurs and the like “cannot disallow customers from bringing in their own containers from home.

The proceeds of the contributions collected will be divided as such.  Half will go to the State, 40 percent will be apportioned to the Environmental Fund (to apply in measures that promote the circular economy, with reuse), 0.5% to the Portuguese Environment Agency, 0.3% to the Tax Authority and the General Inspectorate of Agriculture, Sea, Environment and Spatial Planning and the Food and Economic Security Authority will receive 0.1% each.
