The Vice-President of the Regional Government, Pedro Calado hopes that on the 21st of June or before, the United Kingdom will include Madeira on its safe to travel green list, especially as the region only has 70 active cases at the moment.
Despite acknowledging that it will depend on the UK, Pedro Calado said that “we are not going to wait until the 21st. We have been persistently in contact with the UK Government since Portugal’s withdrawal from the green list. We made a symbolic invitation for Boris Johnson to visit Madeira, so that he could experience first hand the protocols we have in place to protect the island, its residents and its visitors. And, because of this, we want Madeira to be analysed independently of Portugal.”
For this reason, the Regional Government has asked for direct connections between the UK and Madeira to be resumed, and that it is time for the UK to follow in Germany’s tourism footsteps.
