Madeira Has Lowest Fertility Rate in Portugal

According to data revealed by Paulo Baptista Vieira from the Regional Director of Statistics, statistics show that the average number of children born to women of childbearing age living in Madeira and Porto Santo is 1.15.

Paulo Baptista Vieira went on to say that since 1985, Madeira has not reached the number of births that allows for “generation replacement,” which is 2.1 children per woman.

In 2014 numbers dropped to less than one child per woman.
