Social Democrat Representative, Paulo Neves, has criticised the instability surrounding TAP Portugal and has called on the Government of the Republic to ensure that the airline fulfils its duty with regards to Madeira.
In a statement, the social-democrat said that “the current instability surrounding TAP is detrimental to the company, the country and the region in general, especially when one considers the major role the company plays on the region’s economic recovery and development especially on domestic tourism.” Furthermore, he reiterated his call for the mainland government to resolve once and for all the uncertainty experienced within the airline.
“TAP is of fundamental importance to the region. Firstly, in its role as the national carrier between the mainland and Madeira, and secondly through its air connections to our communities around the world; especially those in Venezuela and South Africa.” He went on to say that he does not understand the passivity displayed by the state in drawing up guidelines for the company’s future, thus ensuring its long term stability especially as TAP is of geostrategic importance to Portugal and needs to be put on a sound financial and commercial footing.
