This year, blue flags will flutter over sixteen of the region’s beaches. Banda D’Além beach, Machico has been awarded its first blue flag, while the beaches of Calheta (Porto Santo) and Areeiro (Funchal) have lost theirs due to lack of lifeguards.
This year’s blue flag beaches include:
Porto Moniz, Ponta Delgada, Ribeira do Faial, Ribeira do Natal, Palmeiras, Reis Magos, Barreirinha, Complexo Balnear do Lido, Clube Naval do Funchal, Formosa, Ribeira Brava, Cabeço da Ponta (Porto Santo), Ribeiro Salgado ( Porto Santo), Fontinha (Porto Santo).
In a press statement, the coordinators of the Blue Flag Programme confirmed that 360 Portuguese beaches have blue flags this summer, eight more than last year.
