Suspend Tourist Tax – We Need to Attract Tourists

Taking into account the current global and national circumstances leading to a suspension of tourism, Funchal City Council Councillor, Ana Rita Gonçalves (CDS), proposes the abandonment of the Tourist Tax Approval Procedure, for 12 months.  This, she said, is a time to attract tourists back into the island’s capital and not to discuss or approve fees.

Her proposal states that tourism plays a fundamental role in the regional economy, and is at this moment the most affected by the pandemic.  Especially, as dates regarding the re-opening of the island, as a tourist destination, are uncertain; as is the islands tourism industry expectations on making a full recovery.  Finally, a vast majority of the region’s hotel sector centres around the municipality of Funchal, as well as various entertainment and tourist activities.” Therefore, it is “imperative” that the City Executive takes measures that contribute, alleviate the weight of expenditure in the tourism sector in Funchal, as well as accelerate the recovery of the tourism sector by increasing the competitiveness of Madeira and in particular Funchal as an ideal holiday destination.

The Tourist Tax, she said could be discussed at a later date when the island shows signs of recovery.
