Illegal Fishing Uncovered

Yesterday afternoon, a team from the Nature Watchers Corps in association with the Maritime Police, seized the proceeds of illegal fishing activity, carried out in the Garajau Partial Nature Reserve.

After identification, the fish were taken to the Regional Directorate of Fisheries, where it was confirmed that the catch was ‘consumption fit’ and subsequently handed to Funchal officials.

The Garajau Partial Nature Reserve is located east of Funchal. It comprises of an area of approximately six miles and runs from Ponta do Lazareto, to the west, and Ponta da Oliveira, to the east. Among other prohibitions, the reserve strictly forbids any fishing, including commercial or sports activities; spearfishing, the use of nets and motorised vessels.

All those involved will face legal action.
