Funerals Are Permitted Says Regional Government

Following on from the Municipality of Funchal’s decree that all cemeteries in the Funchal district are to be closed for the foreseeable future, the Funchal City Council has just clarified that funerals and other funeral acts, ceremonies and events will continue to take place in municipal cemeteries.  These, however, are subject to the provisions stated in Decree no. 2-A / 2020, of March 20, of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, which proceeds with the execution of the declaration of the State of Emergency, made by Decree of the President of the Republic.

Therefore, a maximum number of 20 people may attend funerals and other funeral acts, ceremonies and events that take place in municipal cemeteries; providing social distancing and other protection measures recommended by the Directorate-General for Health are adhered to by both public, funeral agency employees and mourners.

The statement reaffirms that all ‘general visits to municipal cemeteries during the duration of the State of Emergency are prohibited.’
