Miguel Albuquerque has confirmed that a Dutch tourist holidaying in Madeira is the first confirmed case of the virus in the Region. According to newspaper sources, the first analysis has proved positive, but it is still necessary to wait for confirmation from the Ricardo Jorge Institute.
The infected tourist arrived last Thursday, before the imposed quarantine by the regional government, and who has travelled around the island over the last couple of days. The tourist was staying at Quinta do Sol, Funchal which has been secured by local police who are now controlling the access and exit points of the hotel, barring anyone from entering or exiting, including hotel employees. At this point, many of the guests are on their balconies, waiting for news.
The hotel has 121 guests who are all confined to their rooms.
