After a week of transatlantic travel, cruise ship ‘Marella Celebration’ arrived in Funchal Bay from Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, who have just confirmed their first cases of the coronavirus. The small passenger ship was scheduled to dock today in the port of Funchal, having reserved a birth on the south pier. However, due to new restrictions, the Government has prohibited the disembarkation of passengers from cruise ships in all ports, allowing vessels to only berth for supply and maintenance needs.
The liner, ‘Marella Celebration,’ who is due to sail to Lisbon – (which is also under the same constraints as Funchal) has been moored off the coast of Funchal since 10 am this morning. The Portuguese Navy are closely monitoring the situation, and the NRP Douro is currently stationed at the mouth of the harbour.
