The Regional Authority for Economic Activities (ARAE) has informed Madeirans not to buy a toy described as a ‘Multicoloured wooden rattle with metal bells on the top’, from the online sale page ‘Joom’, as the rattle is a potential hazard due to the presence of small parts that can quickly come off and be ingested.
ARAE also warn of a teddy bear advertised on eBay described as a ‘Soft teddy bear available in different colours with LED lights’, which has several non-conformities. The “handle of the zipper- and the nose’ of the teddy bear can be easily detached. When opening the lock on the back of the toy, the internal mechanism is accessible, and fragments of the cables, parts of the LEDs and the glue of the LEDs can easily be removed. Also, the electric cable inside the toy is accessible and easily removable. Furthermore, the wire which vastly exceeds the 220mm allowed could entangle and strangle a small child. Further complications include the filling, weak seams while the battery compartment contravenes safety standards as it can be opened quickly and comprises of small parts and sharp edges.
Finally, there is a chemical risk due to the presence of phthalates – the plastic coatings of the electrical wires which contain traces of phthalates DEHP (Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate), DIBP (Diisobutyl phthalate) and DINP (Diisononyl phthalate).
