Young Madeiran in Campaign to Combat Extreme Poverty

Young Madeiran, Rúben Castro, 29, is one of 55 volunteers, aged between 17 and 34, mostly students, activists and young professionals, who were selected from hundreds of candidates to participate in the Youth Ambassadors Programme of ONE Campaign, the anti-poverty group co-founded by U2’s frontman, Bono.

In an interview, Rúben stated that “Everyone who lives on this planet should have the opportunity to live a dignified life. The place where we were born should not define the way we live.  In most cases, the suffering that many experiences could be easily preventable. I want to fight for an equal world. I believe that ending poverty is not an act of charity, but one of justice.”

Many young activists have pledged to fight against global inequalities. This year, the group will focus on campaigns related to global health, the European Union budget for 2021-2027 and increasing awareness of global disparities.
