First Coronavirus Case in Madeira?

Late this afternoon, IASAÚDE confirmed their first suspected case of the new Coronavirus.  According to information the patient arrived from Milan and was promptly referred to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital, where he will remain in hospital isolation.

Biological samples are undergoing analysis and IASAÚDE has stated they will provide further details when they have more information.

So far twenty-six people are under ‘voluntary quarantine’ for the virus.  However despite the increase in alarm throughout the region, up until this afternoon there were no confirmed cases.

The lab results are back from the first suspected case of coronavirus in Madeira. During a press conference Herberto Jesus, the president of IASAUDE, confirmed that the tests had come back negative but still have to be validated by the National Institute of Health Ricardo Jorge.

Details released now say that it was a nineteen-year-old woman from Funchal who has been studying on the mainland was thought to have the new Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Concluding, Herberto Jesus praised Madeira’s “laboratory work” saying that the island has all the capabilities of detecting the new coronavirus.
