Writing on their Facebook page the Porto Moniz City Council has advised citizens of the increased risk of forest fire after receiving a warning from the Regional Civil Protection Service on ‘Adverse Meteorological Conditions – Hot Weather’.
Given the warnings issued by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), the Civil Protection recommends the “everyone adopts a sensible approach towards the danger of forest fires and takes the necessary preventive and precautionary measures.” And as such, the lighting of recreational (BBQ) fires and the burning of cut or brushwood is forbidden at this time.
Likewise, they state that lanterns, rockets or anything that can pose as a fire accelerant should not be used and that no fires are to be lit in any of the forest areas or roads surrounding them.
Please note that several fires have ignited in the last two days with the fire in Ribeira da Vaca, Ponta do Pargo breaking out at 5 am this morning.
