Region Prepares for Possible Coronavirus Threat

Madeira is preparing itself for any possible outbreaks of the Coronavirus in the region says the  president of IASAÚDE, Herberto Jesus.  In a statement, he said that he has been in contact with the General Health Directorate (DGS) and international health organisations to monitor the evolution of the situation, while officials throughout the region are surveying the resources available and preparing worst case scenarios.

Fears of a suspected case in Portugal, where a man was admitted to the Curry Cabral Hospital in Lisbon on Saturday, on suspicion of infection turned out to be groundless. The patient had arrived from the Hubei province in China, the epicentre of the new viral pneumonia and was under observation, however the laboratory results proved negative.

Guidance on the new Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is already available on the Directorate-General for Health website.  The guidance notes give instructions for health care professionals should they come into contact with either suspicious or confirmed virus cases. In addition, posters and leaflets are to be displayed in airports, ports and health care units.
