Talking to local newspapers, Lt. Col. Marco Nunes confirmed that the body found this afternoon in Caniçal is in an “advanced state of decomposition.”
The GNR Protection and Relief Intervention Team (GIPS) were called out to Ponta de São Lourenço in Caniçal this afternoon after an alert was raised that a body was lying prostrate among the rocks in an area that is difficult to reach.
During the initial investigation, the authorities have stated that the body is in an advanced state of decomposition and they believe that death occurred several days ago. However, this will not be confirmed until an autopsy has been done. Given the circumstances of the appearance of the body, the GNR has contacted the Regional Civil Protection Service and the Judicial Police, while forensic specialists were called out to the area to gather any possible evidence.
At the moment, there is a suspicion that the body is that of a foreign woman who disappeared at the end of last year, in Ponta de São Lourenço, in Caniçal, but the authorities have said that cannot say anything for sure until the body has been identified and cause of death established.
