Word of the Year

According to newspaper sources, an online word vote has revealed that the most popular word in Portugal for 2019 is “domestic violence’ which accounted for 27.7% of the vote.

The winning word, released this week at the José Saramago Municipal Library in Loures, is said to be justified as it is the result of the numerous cases that have been known throughout the year and which, unfortunately, resulted in fatalities.  Thirty-five women, men and children were murdered as a result of domestic abuse in Portugal last year alone.

In second place was “sustainability,” which had led the vote from the very beginning, only to be pipped at the post. Use of the word is encouraging as it highlights the growing concern expressed by Portuguese citizens on sustainability and the threat to life as a result of climate change.

In the third position was “misinformation”, taking 13.8% of the votes.

A total of twenty thousand votes were registered.
