ENM – We Tried to Make the Ferry Work

Responding to criticism about their ferry contract termination, ENM has issued a statement saying that the provision of public maritime transport services between the mainland and Madeira by ferry provided for ‘the carriage of passengers as well as freight.’ Stating that 50% of the total revenue generated from the operation was due to the transportation of goods “although a significant part of this related to the transportation of cars”.

The statement further clarifies that the company made “considerable commercial effort to try to be able to carry more cargo, and the vast majority of its ideas were unsuccessful for several reasons. They went on to say that if it were to transport all the cargo from the mainland to Madeira, under its current restrictions, of only being able to carry goods in three containers, they would have to run twelve ferry services a week.
