The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) confirms that at 11:29 am today, that the Continent Seismic Network recorded an earthquake registering a magnitude of 3.0 on the Richter Scale, 6 km off the east coast of Porto Moniz.
As a result, the IPMA has said that there were no reports of the earthquake being felt; however, if the situation warranted it, further communication would be released later. What they have said, is that the location of the epicentre of an earthquake is a complex physical and mathematical process which depends on seismic wave propagation algorithms and models. And different agencies may produce slightly different results. Similarly, preliminary determinations are usually corrected later by the integration of more information.
