The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) and the Regional Civil Engineering Laboratory (LREC) will conduct an assessment of the levada route of Caldeirão Verde early next week, which will comprise mainly of a detailed evaluation of the incident site.
The Regional Civil Engineering Laboratory will conduct a survey and an assessment of the site of the tragedy, as well as other points of the Caldeirão Verde pedestrian route in Santana. Only after the conclusions of the LREC study and that of an expert, will the decision be taken whether or not to re-open the levada.
Despite several interventions by the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) over the past year, such as the replacement of new balconies, safety zones and walkways, Susana Prada, the Regional Secretary of the Environment wants to ensure total safety, and said that only after the evaluation and LREC reports will it be possible to determine the future of the levada walk.
