Flu Vaccine Uptake Increase

The Madeira Health Service has acquired 39,000 influenza vaccines worth €400,000, and today the Regional Secretary for Health, Pedro Ramos, said that he is pleased with the results of this year’s influenza vaccination campaign.

Thirty-nine thousand vaccines have been ordered, and already 5,584 people have been vaccinated since the campaign stated on the 14th of October, resulting in a 20% rise in the number of people being immunised. While speaking to journalists, the health secretary said that it was encouraging that the number of those taking advantage of the scheme had significantly increased and that it was a sign that the population has the same health goals as the Regional Government.

He went on to say that the vaccination is essential, not only in Madeira but in Porto Santo as well and that the flu jab is recommended for all those over the age of sixty-five. The vaccine is free for all citizens over the age of sixty-five, those with compromised immune systems, pregnant women, public health sectors works and firefighters. The vaccines are also available under prescription at community pharmacies, and reimbursement is available for citizens who are not included in the free vaccination groups.
