Susana Prada, the Regional Secretary for Environment and Natural Resources recently visited the 22-kilometre repair works of Levada das Figueiras in Machico. During her visit she said that the Regional Government is doing everything in its power to provide farmers with the necessary water through their essential repair work programme.
According to reports, 40 million euros has been set aside to pay for essential repair work of several levada networks which serve Câmara de Lobos, Ribeira Brava, Santana, Machico and Porto Santo.
However, water losses in these five municipalities only represent 30% of the total of water lost through damaged, faulty or broken infrastructure throughout the island. The districts of Funchal and Santa Cruz have also been advised to ensure that their water supply networks remain in good working order, to ensure that no water is wasted and that domestic, agriculture and commercial demands can be met.
Ms Prada went on to say that the regional government subsidises the levada water rate by €3 million per year to ensure that farmers are not financially overburdened with high water bills.
