The Portuguese Labour Party (PTP) candidate for the Regional Parliament, Raquel Coelho, visited Porto Moniz this week to discuss and address the difficulties experienced by those living in rural areas.
During her visit, she spoke to members of the press saying that ‘We are witnessing a population decline in towns and villages in the north of the island, including Porto Moniz, Santana and São Vicente, due to lack of work and migration of people to areas where there is work. As such, there are places where no child has been born for over ten years.’
During her visit she stressed that despite the tourist attraction of many of these municipalities, coupled with potential environmental and agricultural possibilities, the northern provinces of Madeira are falling behind their more successful and opportunist southern counterparts, and something needs to be done to redress the balance.
