A 43-year-old man was arrested by the Madeiran Public Security Police (PSP) for killing his pet dog this week.
According to a statement issued by the PSP, the crime happened due to a family argument where the man stabbed the family pet dog to death. On receiving further information, officers of the Funchal Police Division attended the crime scene to obtain evidence and arrest the man.
The suspect was in court today before the Judicial Court of Funchal to understand the charges made against him. Under the current Criminal Code, anyone inflicting pain, suffering or any other mistreatment to a pet animal may be imprisoned for one and two years, depending on the severity and extent of the damage.
The PSP has also reiterated that “Anyone believing that an animal is suffering from abuse should report the incidence to the police immediately.’
