The municipalities of Santa Cruz and Machico are classed as ‘very high risk’ fire areas today.
In response, the Caniço Parish Council has already warned the general public of the situation asking everyone to be extra vigilant at this time. Fire hazard levels are determined by the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) and have five levels, ranging from low to highest, with very high being the fourth most severe level.
The IPMA uses air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and amount of rain over the last 24 hours to calculate their fire risk classifications.
