Extra Fire Prevention Measures Needed

Raquel Coelho, deputy head of the Portuguese Labour Party (PTP) has said that the risk of forest fires can be minimised through the creation of fire zones between the forest and residential neighbourhoods as well as the construction of rainwater storage tanks in high-risk areas.

While talking to reporters, she insisted that lessons have to be learned from past mistakes, especially as fires have hit the region badly over the last couple of years. She went on to say that by investing in fire prevention initiatives, tragedy can be avoided or at least lessened, but to do so, there has to be cohesive urban and semi-urban land management policy as well stronger forestry planning and control initiatives.
