The Captain of the Port of Funchal, Guerreiro Cardoso has confirmed that the body of the man who disappeared four days ago from the north of the island in the Seixal area, was found this morning in the vicinity of Ribeira da Janela, Porto Moniz.
Current news reports state that the body is in a hard to reach area,and firefighters were trying to find out how to remove it at lunchtime today. It would also appear that the 35-year-old man who while catching crabs on Friday the 10th of August fell overboard has been identified by his clothing and a tattoo.
Guerreiro Cardoso also said that once the body has been retrieved, it will be handed over to the Coroners Office and that every possible measure is being taken to remove the corpse from the site. Various entities from the islands Search and Rescue teams were involved in the search for the missing man and the recovery of the body including SANAS Madeira, Funchal’s Lifeguard Station, divers of the Forensic Diving Group and the Underwater Operations of the Madeira Detachment Maritime Police.
São Vicente and Porto Moniz Firefighters, as well as the Public Security Police, were also involved in the search for the missing man since Saturday when the Civil Protection Service of Madeira received a distress call from the man’s stepfather.
