Nine year old Paulo Renato, who saw his dream come true when footballer Cristiano Ronaldo visited him, giving him a signed pair of football boots has died. Having battled cancer for five years the young boy, who refused to sleep at the hospital, died at his aunts home with his mother in the early hours of the morning.
Struggling with cancer, which began in his foot and eventually affected his whole body, including his lungs, his mother had hoped to raise €90,000 in order to send him to Germany for treatment, but unfortunately the funds, which only total €8,000 were not enough. The experimental treatment was to buy time and the monies raised will now, according to his aunt be used to help other children in need of treatment.
On talking to reporters his aunt said that Paulo was a warrior and realised his dream when he met the footballing ace earlier on this month. She went on to say that she believes that having met his hero, Paulo gave up the fight.
The work for children with cases similar to Paulo’s is to continue, says his aunt, who will continue through Alma Lusa to create fund-raising events to help other children with cancer receive pioneering medicine early on in their treatment.
Paulo leaves behind his parents and 16-year-old brother.
