Anger as Funchal City Council Clamps Down

A team from the supervisory department of the Funchal Chamber in connection with the PSP Rapid Intervention Brigade have seized chairs, tables and other items such as paintings and flowers from restaurants, snack bars and cafés who have created outdoor seating areas on Rua da Carreira, Funchal without a permit.

As part of a crackdown on illegal outside seating along Funchal’s streets, the Funchal City Council has said that it will continue to inspect the city’s avenue’s and penalise those flouting current guidelines.  According to a source, all establishments were checked two months ago, and owners were informed about what can and can’t be licenced. Last week, traders were notified again of their need to comply with the regulations and told that any infractions would be dealt with accordingly.

Further seizures of goods and materials were taken yesterday from a terrace in the Old Town.
