The municipality of Calheta is launching its new initiative ‘Generation Hug’ (Abraço de Gerações) tomorrow, 25th of July 25 from 14:00, at the parish pavilion of Arco da Calheta.
A press release issued by the municipality states that this is an ‘intergenerational project’ within the district of Calheta. The statement goes on to say that the initiative is a pioneer project of the Calheta City Council whose main objective is to celebrate Grandparents’ Day, by promoting an intergenerational meeting to raise awareness in preserving generational contact, and reinforce ties between grandchildren, children, parents and grandparents and create closer links between families. By doing so, the municipality also wants to highlight the needs of the elderly and try and eradicate the increase in elderly abuse.
The programme has over 400 people, mostly grandparents and grandchildren taking part. At 16:00 the President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque is expected to arrive, who will be met by the Mayor of Calheta, Carlos Teles.
