The Madeira Royal Way Association has announced that they are holding their first Literary Walk called ‘No Trilho dos Guanches,’ tomorrow 7th of July. Walkers are to be accompanied by Madeiran writer Cristiano Pestana, author of ‘Uma Aura Atlântica,’ who will lead participants through his novel and discuss some of his historical research of Madeira.
All those interested are asked to meet the organisers in Ponta do Sol at the carpark next to the river at 08.30, where transport has been arranged to take walkers to the beginning of the Royal Route No. 28 which connects Ponta do Sol to São Vicente. The walk is approximately 25km.
Guanches is a common term used to describe natives of the Canaries who migrated to Madeira as slaves from the islands of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and Gran Canaria. There were Guanches at Ponta do Sol and records show that a João Esmeraldo, who lived in Lombada da Ponta do Sol, owned Guanche slaves.
