Figures just published show that in 2018, 1,898 births took place in Madeira, a drop of 2.0% on the 2017 number of 1,936.
Information released by the Regional Directorate of Statistics shows that 79.9% of births were from mothers aged between 25 and 39 (1,517 births), of which 39.3% were women aged between 30 and 34 years, 32.0% between 35 and 39 years and 28.7% between 25 and 29 years. The data also shows that 4.8% of births were by mothers over the age of 40 and that 0.8% of this figure were mothers over the age of 45.
The municipalities with the highest proportion of births were Funchal (41.8%), followed by Santa Cruz (19.1%) and Câmara de Lobos (15.3%).
This new data will play an integral part in the “RAM 2018 Health Statistics” Publication, which will be released in December this year.
