Island at Risk of Fire

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) stated earlier today that several areas of Madeira are at risk of fire.

Fire risks are determined by temperature, humidity, rainfall and recorded wind speeds within a 24 hour period, while the levels of risk are graded from ‘Reduced’ to ‘Maximum.’  Worryingly, the municipality of  Santa Cruz has been classed as being at ‘Maximum’ risk today with other districts including Machico, Funchal and some areas of Câmara de Lobos being at ‘high’ risk.

Although temperatures and risk alerts are thought to ease this evening in parts of the island due to lower temperatures and weak rain, everyone must remain vigilant.
