Accident Wounds Foreign National

A 65-year-old foreign national was hit by a car this morning on Estrada Monumental.  The Public Security Police (PSP) attended the scene, and the woman was transported to hospital suffering from multiple injuries.

Two Flights Cancelled

Two flights to Madeira were withdrawn this morning.  The 08.20 EasyJet flight from Porto and the late-night TAP flight from Lisbon were both cancelled due to operational reasons.

Conditions at the airport are favourable and everything is operating normally.

1,683 Sticks of Cannabis Seized in Funchal

On the 30th of May, five men and four women aged between 35 – 50 years old were caught selling illegal substances in Funchal.

According to the GNR nine shops were under suspicion of possessing and selling illegal substances.  In total officers confiscated 227 boxes or 1683 cannabis incense sticks. These were tested for narcotic and psychotropic substances and found to contain marijuana.

Underwater Spear Fishermen Unite Against Rubbish

Fighting back at the increased amount of rubbish dumped in the waters off the pier near the Yellow Bar in Caniçal, Tomás Freitas, a keen spear fisherman, accompanied by twenty-four fellow fishermen took part in his initiative to collect as much garbage as possible from the seabed around the harbour area of Caniçal

In addition to the volunteers, the seabed clean-up operation has the support of the Regional Directorate for Spatial Planning and Environment and the Whale Museum.   The rubbish collected will serve two purposes, the first is as part of a scientific study, once completed, the refuse will be used to create a sculpture to develop greater awareness of the hazards of marine pollution and its effects on the environment.
