Água de Pena is the third parish on the island to benefit from a ‘Social Grocery Store.’ The store, which is the first of its kind to be set up outside Funchal, is similar to a typical supermarket except that the food items are free to families and people who are in need and registered with their local Casa do Povo.
During the store’s inauguration the Regional Secretary, Rita Andrade said that it ‘is great to see that Água de Pena’s Casa do Povo had met the challenge of creating a local social grocery store.’ She also stressed that the project had ‘been a gradual process as they had to take one step at a time, but felt that in Água de Pena it made sense, especially as many of the population needed assistance, and who would benefit from this kind of ‘social supermarket.’
The Regional Secretary went on to say that “for this to be possible, they contacted the President of the local Casa do Povo, Fátima Belo, as well as Fátima Aveiro, from the Food Bank. The Food Bank will provide most of the store’s provisions with regional and local companies providing additional support.
The two other ‘social supermarkets’ are located in Bairro da Ribeira Grande, as part of the ASA – Associação de Desenvolvimento de Santo António, and Bairro do Hospital, through the Através da Associação Luís de Camões
