Svitzer Sells to the Sousa Group

Last week the Svitzer company announced that they plan to sell their Portuguese Port Towing business to Pioneiro do Rio Mooring Company and the Sousa Group.  The Svitzer fleet consists of fifteen vessels, two of which are tugs, which are used to provide services to the ports of Lisbon, Setúbal and Sines.

Grupo Sousa is the largest Portuguese shipowner using its own and chartered vessels, and sails regularly to Madeira, Azores, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Canary Islands and ports around mainland Portugal. Not only does it’s business include maritime and port activities, but it also operates within the energy sector, particularly the Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) supply operation between Sines and Madeira for the production of electric energy.

Pioneiro do Rio and Sousa Group will acquire the two Portuguese companies of Svitzer, which includes the crews and fleet of tugboats of Svitzer Portugal.

Providing everything goes according to plan and the Competition Authority endorses the transaction, the sale will be completed in the second half of this year.
