At the Madeira Plenary Session this week, Social Democratic Party (PSD) politician Paulo Freitas discussed Madeira and its ageing population. According to regional statistics, the island’s population remained stable with regards to births and deaths until 2008, with slightly more births than deaths recorded. However, this trend dramatically changed and in 2018 there were 810 more deaths than births. If this phenomenon continues, Madeira’s populace will decrease to 165,000 by 2080, a 34% reduction on the islands 2017 population figure of 254,876.
Paulo Freitas further stated that if this remains the case, there will be enormous challenges to the sustainability of public finances, and urged that measures to create employment and reverse the current population trend have to be taken.
