In a statement, the association has highlighted the negative impact that fish farming will have on Madeira, especially Cabo Girão, which is one of the islands most popular tourist attractions. The association also fears for the quality of the bathing water around the area if the proposed fish farm installation goes ahead. Other concerns include pollution and the effect on local marine life in the surrounding waters.
As such, Madeira Rural is urging its members to fight the proposition to ensure the beauty of Madeira is not spoiled through commercial enterprise.
This is not the first time that the proposed fish farm has caused dismay and concern amongst local inhabitants and environmental groups.
