Yesterday afternoon, a team of experts from the German heavy goods and bus manufacturer Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg Nutzfahrzeuge (MAN) and German police officers arrived on the island. They are here to assist the Portuguese authorities in their investigation into the bus accident that killed 29 German tourists on the 17th of April.
On arrival, they travelled immediately to the inspection site to start their analysis, which will become a crucial part of the Public Prosecutions Service investigation. The German team comprises of several road accident experts who will be using specialised equipment to ascertain what went wrong on the day of the accident. They will assist officers from the Judicial Police (PJ) and the Public Security Police (PSP) and a member from the Public Prosecutors Office, who are all actively involved in the investigation.
At the moment the bus has been disassembled while its mechanical components have been stripped down to ensure that both the German and Portuguese authorities can analyse them carefully. There will also be a close examination of the bus’s history; this includes its construction, reviews and its journey history. One thing that has been made clear is that although the German experts are in Madeira to assist with the investigation, the following procedural phase will be the sole responsibility of the Portuguese Public Prosecutor Office.
