International Forest Day Celebrations

To celebrate International Forest Day, the Regional Secretary for the Environment and Natural Resources offered employees the opportunity to plant a tree, shrub or plant.  Four hundred and fifty endemic species of plants, shrubs and trees were on offer including Dragon Trees, Massaroco (Pride of Madeira), Barbusano (Apollonius barbujano), Laurel and Zimbreiro (Juniper).

As employees gratefully picked up seedlings and young plants, Susana Prada, the Regional Secretary for the Environment and Natural Resources provided information about the characteristics and planting needs of each species.

In a statement, she opined that ‘they have acquired a new way at looking at Madeira’s native forest, but that does not mean that action can only be taken on one day a year, and that future initiatives and public participation will create a more caring community.’
