Early last night flames took hold of the Insular de Moinhos building in Funchal. The fire was attended by firefighters, the Public Security Police (PSP) and the Judiciary Police (JP).
As well as tackling the flames, firefighters had to rescue a man found on the third floor of the building. After being identified by the PSP, he was taken to hospital.
This morning the Director of the Regional Civil Engineering Laboratory, Pimenta de França, said that after conducting a preliminary inspection, he could confirm that the building is not at imminent risk of collapsing, although the tower is unbalanced. However, they will have to wait until Monday before conducting another assessment.
