Kate and Martin Gannon are proud to announce that they will be opening their small private garden on Thursdays from 10.00 – 16.00 starting on the 7th of March, in aid of the Canil Municipal do Funchal.
After purchasing the property in 2001, the couple spent two years clearing the weeds and laid down a general outline for the garden including a vegetable patch. However, it was only when they moved to Madeira in 2004, that they decided that their original designs and thoughts of designing a garden were unachievable. This was mainly due to the garden’s topography, and the fact that they changed their ideas on a regular basis. The plan, was now to create an informal garden using most of the plants available on the island, as well as features that would catch the eye and imagination.
And the garden has grown from there. Having hand built a 55 feet, 10-foot-high dry-stone wall to replace the one that collapsed, stairs and other retaining walls, Martin and Kate’s garden has transformed from a barren wasteland into a small paradise, full of nooks and crannies, structured flower beds, winding paths, unique features and seasoned planting, allowing both native and non-native species to flower freely together. Creating a haven for bird, bee and insect life.
In addition to the flower beds, they have built a small orchid house, a Jurassic garden while their pond is home to approximately 80 voracious goldfish and the occasional Egret visitor.
