Considering the recent bankruptcy of German airline, Germania and the failure of Monarch, Air Berlin and Lauda Air, the Portuguese Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (APAVT), are urging the government and competent authorities to take immediate action, adopt policies and invest in Madeira’s Cristiano Ronaldo’s airport to resolve some of its operational issues.
The president of APAVT, Pedro Costa Ferreira declared that it is incomprehensible and unacceptable that nothing is being done to solve the problems at Madeira’s airport. This is shortsighted, as Madeira is so reliant on tourism. Concluding he said that the islands ability to attract new airlines and replace those that had failed solely depended on the airport remaining operationally viable.
As of 15.20 pm (14022019) the airport is in chaos due to flight delays and cancellations. Queues at the Groundforce desk are approximately 100 metres. Tensions have been high as one passenger, fed of waiting ripped his ticket in half in front of one of the four Groundforce employees desperately trying to sort out the mess caused by today’s adverse weather conditions.
